Engraved on a Nation: Man vs. Machine

1 episode x 60 mins.
Genre: Documentary
Year: 2019

1997 was a momentous year for Canadian sport: Jacques Villeneuve was the first Canadian to win the Formula 1 World Championship, and Larry Walker was the first Canadian to win the National League MVP. In the wake of their exceptional achievements, both Villeneuve and Walker were shortlisted to win the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s outstanding athlete of the year, and so the 1997 judging panel faced an impossible decision. Only one of these great athletes could win, and Villeneuve was ultimately awarded the honour.

Through their own words and alongside those of their families, coaches, teammates and rivals, MAN VS. MACHINE  reveals the extraordinary career paths that saw Villeneuve and Walker reach such great heights in these traditionally ‘non-Canadian’ sports, while members of the 1997 Lou Marsh judging panel reveal how they finally came to their controversial decision - one that is still being questioned to this day.

MAN VS. MACHINE is produced by Anaid Productions in association with Bell Media and directed by Simon Ennis. The documentary is part of the Canadian Screen Award-winning 6-episode original series ENGRAVED ON A NATION which returns exclusively to TSN.

MAN VS. MACHINE is available for on-demand viewing through TSN, TSN.ca, the TSN app, as well as Crave.
